Home Feng Shui Guide: Does Facing West with Your Head Really Cause Financial Loss? A Real Case from a Dongguan Business Owner

Mr. Li, who runs a hardware factory in Dongguan, suffered three consecutive years of losses after moving into his new home in 2019. I reviewed his floor plan and noticed the bed facing west, the fish tank placed incorrectly, and the kitchen directly opposite the bathroom. After making adjustments, he secured a major order within six months, netting over 600,000 yuan. This home feng shui guide uses real-life cases to explain layout principles that anyone can understand.

Master, could you take a look? Did I start having bad luck after moving into that house?

Mr. Li sat across from me, spinning his Mercedes key in his right hand. His Dongguan accent and rapid speech betrayed his nervousness.

He runs a hardware factory in Chang'an Town. In 2018, the business was thriving and he made a profit, so in 2019 he moved into a spacious 200+ sqm apartment, spending over $1 million on renovations.

In the first three months after moving in, orders dropped by 30%. In 2020, during the pandemic, the factory nearly shut down. It was even worse in 2021: a long-time customer owed over $800,000 and still hasn't paid.

"My wife says I have bad luck and should change my fortune. I don't believe in fate, but I can't ignore it—this house makes me feel terrible."

I'll have him bring over the floor plan.

A quick look reveals several issues.

The master bedroom's headboard faces due west, and the wall behind it contains an elevator shaft. The occupant is a Rabbit born in 1975, with a weak Wood and strong Metal in their BaZi chart—most vulnerable to additional Metal attacks. Since an elevator shaft represents Metal and operates continuously, it creates a constant threat, like waving a knife behind his head.

The classic Feng Shui text "Yang Zhai San Yao" states, "The head of the bed should rest against a solid wall, not an empty space; it should be in a quiet area, not near movement." This means you should avoid placing your bed where there is no backing or where there is vibration. An elevator shaft is a prime example of both emptiness and motion. Sleeping near such a spot can cause frequent awakenings and vivid dreams. Over time, this leads to mental fatigue and poor decision-making.

Mr. Li slapped his thigh: "Exactly! After I moved in, I wake up every night around 2 or 3 a.m. and can't fall back asleep. During daytime meetings, I'm constantly distracted."

There's also an aquarium. He heard that "water governs wealth," so he placed a two-meter-long aquarium in the southeast corner of his living room, housing nine Arowana fish.

The Southeast is the Xun sector, associated with Wood. Since his Bazi chart has weak Wood energy, placing water here would normally be beneficial—Water nourishes Wood. However, the issue lies in the fish tank's shape: he chose a triangular one, with its sharp corner pointing directly at the sofa.

Triangles belong to Fire, creating a clash with Water. His BaZi chart also lacks strong Fire energy.

I was unsure at first whether this fish tank would be beneficial or harmful. Later, I consulted the Qing Zhang Jing, which states: "Qi scatters when hit by wind and stops when meeting water." While water can gather Qi, an improper shape collects negative energy instead.

I only understood this later.

"Mr. Li, did you have a few big arguments at home after buying that fish tank?"

He paused, startled. "How did you know? In the summer of 2020, my wife and I argued over a factory ledger so fiercely we almost divorced."

In the Year of Gengzi, Zi water clashes with Wu fire in his destiny chart. Fire governs the heart and home. With the sharp corner of the fish tank pointing at the sofa, it's like adding fuel to the fire.

Now, about the kitchen. It's located in the northwest corner, directly opposite the bathroom door.

The northwest sector corresponds to the Qian position, representing the male head of the household. The kitchen is associated with Fire, while Qian represents Metal; since Fire conquers Metal, this configuration is known as "Fire Burning Heaven's Gate." Additionally, the foul energy from the bathroom clashes with the kitchen, termed "Pollution Clashing Against Prosperity."

Mr. Li had ongoing stomach issues during those two years, and he underwent a polyp removal surgery in 2021.

The *Zang Shu* states, "Qi responds to Qi, and the blessings of ancestors reach people." This may sound mystical, but it simply means that a space's energy field affects our physical health and emotions. Imagine cooking in a kitchen directly facing a toilet—you'd hardly have an appetite smelling those odors all day.

I proposed a solution to him.

Move the bed to the east wall, with the head facing east. Since his BaZi has weak Wood energy, the east direction (which corresponds to Wood) will help strengthen it. Keep the space under the bed clear and free of clutter.

Move the fish tank to the north wall and replace it with a round or rectangular one. In Feng Shui, the north represents water; round shapes represent metal. Metal generates water, which in turn generates wood—aligning with your birth chart.

Hang a blackout curtain on the kitchen door and keep the bathroom door closed. Place a copper gourd in the northwest corner; since copper belongs to metal, the gourd dispels negative energy.

He was skeptical but did it anyway.

In March of 2022, he called me to say he landed a big order in Shenzhen: supplying hardware for a residential complex. The net profit was over $600,000.

"Master, isn't it strange? After changing the nightstand, my sleep improved, I feel clearer-headed during the day, and I'm less impatient when discussing matters with others."

This isn't a bug.

When you sleep well, your mind is sharp and your judgments are accurate. Feng Shui optimizes exactly that—creating an environment that works with you, not against you.

Later, he also rearranged the office at the factory. The desk was no longer positioned with its back to the door; instead, it was moved to a spot against the wall. In 2023, an additional production line was added.

He visited me during this Spring Festival and brought a box of tea. When he left, his key didn't turn again.

Master, my wife says I'm not doomed anymore.

He smiled and put the key in his pocket.
